Rules After Wearing Rudraksha Mala – A Handy Guide

A couple of years back, a seeker came to me wearing a beautiful rudraksha mala. However, he was extremely stressed.

That’s when it hit me — unless we respect the rules after wearing rudraksha mala, its energy slowly fades. And this isn’t just my experience.

The Srimad Devi Bhagavatam (Skandha, or Book, 11) tells us that rudraksha trees have their origins in Lord Shiva’s tears. Rudraksha beads thus have healing powers.

However, the Shiva Mahapurana (Vidyesvara Samhita, Chapter 25, Part 87) explains how rudraksha’s powers are only effective when its rules are respected. So the scriptures agree.

In this blog, I, Jhivansh, healer, parapsychologist, and rudraksha lover, will help you unearth the real reasons behind the rudraksha mala dos and don’ts.

Rules to Maintain the Purity of Rudraksha Mala: My Reflections

The history of rudraksha, per the Shiva Mahapurana (Vidyesvara Samhita, Chapter 25, Parts 4–7), states that Lord Shiva’s tears that eventually became rudraksha were meant to bring balance and positivity.

Science too agrees. A 2003 study by Dr. Suhas Roy from IIT-BHU states that rudraksha beads give off bioelectric impulses that control the biofield energy of the human body.

These beads can thus impact the nervous system, reducing stress and negativity. However, any contamination of the rudraksha causes disruptions in this flow of energy.

So how did I care for something so sacred without turning my life into a rulebook? Let me show you how a few simple acts can purify both you and your mala.

What to Do After Wearing Rudraksha Mala

Here’s what I personally follow — a few sacred habits that keep my mala alive with energy:

  • Clean my rudraksha mala at home regularly
  • Keep the mala safely stored when not wearing it
  • Wash my hands before touching the mala

What to Avoid After Wearing Rudraksha Mala

And here are certain things I keep in mind while handling my rudraksha mala:

  • Avoid letting people touch the mala, as it absorbs energies
  • Keep the mala away when attending funerals or consuming alcohol
  • Avoid keeping the rudraksha mala with jewelry or metal chains

I understand — the rules after wearing rudraksha mala can seem overwhelming. But, over time, you will see how each rule protects its sacred frequency.

Myths About Rudraksha Mala Debunked: Rise Above Half-Truths

An acquaintance once expressed his concern saying, “My wife has been wanting to wear a rudraksha mala ever since our Haridwar trip last month. But this isn’t safe, right?”

I smiled — not at him, but at how myths weave into our lives. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard such rudraksha mala misconceptions

Let me run you through a few such myths:

1. Women can’t wear rudraksha mala

No authentic scripture bars women from wearing rudraksha. The rules after wearing rudraksha mala don’t differentiate between genders.

2. Rudraksha malas shouldn’t be worn while sleeping

No scripture forbids wearing rudraksha mala while asleep. I’ve felt rudraksha guiding me better in sleep. However, the rough rudraksha beads injured me at times.

3. A rudraksha mala should have 108 beads

Yes, tradition favors 108 beads (plus the bindu). But what matters more is whether the mala has original rudraksha beads and rests on a sincere heart.

4. Rudraksha mala works only for Shiva devotees

A friend once asked me, “Will the rudraksha mala work even if I don’t worship Shiva?” I explained that the Shiva Mahapurana (Vidyesvara Samhita, Chapter 25, Parts 6162) states that even devotees of other gods can wear the mala.

How Does Rudraksha Mala React to Negativity?

Not long ago, a seeker asked me, “Should I wear rudraksha mala when in grief?” It made me pause. I explained how grief too is important.

How would you realize the importance of life’s spurts of positivity if you haven’t felt the gloom of negativity? But grief around us has the potential to disrupt the mala’s aura.

Quantum physics says the universe is a collection of vibrations or energies. Even one jarring thought can muffle the subtle hum of your bead.

My experience has taught me that the rudraksha mala’s aura can be retained by keeping it away from:

  • Funerals
  • Hospitals or nursing homes
  • Places associated with suffering

However, the Shiva Mahapurana (Vidyesvara Samhita, Chapter 25, Parts 8485) states that the rudraksha mala can absorb any negativity to protect the wearer.

I would say, the choice lies with the wearer. Whether I would like to protect the mala from negativity or let it protect my aura from negative energies is solely my decision.

Removing Negative Energy: How to Cleanse Rudraksha Mala

If you think your mala has been exposed to negativity, I suggest you reenergize it at home. I usually soak my mala in Ganga jal overnight and chant “Om Namah Shivaya.”

This is not just to cleanse the bead, but to cleanse my own intent. How can I expect to heal without cleansing my aura too?

Rudraksha Mala and Physical Intimacy: How Energies Shift

People in relationships often ask me, “Can I wear rudraksha mala during intimacy?” I explain to them how the rudraksha mala is affected negatively by sexual energy

During intimacy, the surge of hormones can create energy waves that ripple against the mala’s subtle aura — like a stone disturbing a still pond.

I would suggest not wearing the mala during such acts. Why risk losing the mala’s healing power for a few moments of intimacy?

My Daily Ritual: Safeguarding the Mala from Damage

A close friend once told me that he wore his mala into the shower daily,  thinking water would cleanse it. Weeks later, the beads looked dry and lifeless.

I soon realized he was following every rule in the book except one. He was bathing with soap while wearing the mala.

Water, in its purest form, doesn’t collide with the mala’s aura. However, anything that’s not organic dehydrates rudraksha beads.

Here’s how I retain the benefits of rudraksha mala daily:

  • Avoid overusing soap, shampoo, or chemical substances.
  • Bathe in pure water, such as Ganga jal or spring water.
  • Use organic bathing oils, such as sandalwood oil.
  • In case my rudraksha mala gets wet, I dry it with a cloth immediately.

Diet After Wearing Rudraksha Mala: Why Food Matters

Does your diet impact the rudraksha mala’s energy? I too once used to wonder whether a single meal could dim the power of something so sacred.

Even these days, the most common question I get asked is, “Can the rudraksha mala and non-veg food co-exist?” This makes me ponder a lot.

You might be swayed by certain misconceptions and wonder what to eat after wearing rudraksha mala. But the rules after wearing rudraksha mala aren’t against non-vegetarians.

Before I give you some insights into the rudraksha mala diet restrictions, let’s see how Lord Krishna described the different food habits in the Srimad Bhagavad Gita (Verses 17.7 to 17.13):

1. Sattvic diet

The Srimad Bhagavad Gita suggests a Sattvic diet, as it elevates spiritual vibrations. Now, of course, fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, and sprouts cleanse you inside out.

2. Rajasic diet

Rajasic food, Lord Krishna warns, feeds ambition and restlessness. These food items, such as onion, garlic, coffee, and sweets, elevate your energy and lead to stress.

3. Tamasic diet

A Tamasic diet, meaning any form of meat, fish, or eggs, may bring down the mala’s vibrational frequency. Alcohol and cigarettes too fall under this category.

The relation between Shiva and rudraksha is eternal. The Shiva Mahapurana suggests vegetarian food for all Shiva bhakts.

But neither the scriptures nor the rules after wearing rudraksha mala stop non-vegetarian people from wearing the rudraksha. However, balance is the key!

As long as you maintain a balanced diet with a lot of Sattvic elements too, your mala’s aura is safe. Eat with awareness — not blind denial.
